Resin Tag Length of One-Step and Self-Etching Adhesives Bonded to Unground Enamel

Abstract: Length of resin tags yielded by utilization of an one-step conventional adhesive system and self-etching adhesive system on unground enamel was observed. In study Groups I and III, the enamel surface was etched for 60 seconds with 35% phosphoric acid gel and adhesive systems PQ1 (Ultradent Products, Inc) and Adper Prompt L Pop (3M/ESPE) were applied. Adper Prompt L Pop (3M/ESPE) was also applied in Group II in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. After application of these adhesive systems to de… Show more

“…[ 9 12 26 27 ] Table 4 in our study, showed the mean depth of penetration for Group A and Group B to be 55.0739 μm and 50.34090 μm, respectively. These values obtained were higher than values obtained by Buonocore,[ 1 ] Wickwire and Rentz (25 μm),[ 28 ] Voss and Charbeneau (5–10 μm),[ 27 ] and Pahlavan (7 μm) et al [ 29 ] but similar to values obtained by Retief,[ 9 ] Arakawa et al (50 μm),[ 12 ] Asmussen,[ 26 ] Sundfeld et al (53 μm),[ 30 ] and Ramesh Kumar et al (53.9754 μm). [ 31 ] The reason for this increased tag length by phosphoric acid etched groups could be due to severe etching by unattenuated phosphoric acid.…”

“…They result in substantially lower, than in the case of classic etching, irreversible changes in the tissue and affect the production of shorter resin hooks. However, they generate a sufficient bonding strength for the clinical procedure and there are rarer cases of bonding errors in the enamel-adhesive system phase than the classic etching method [ 26 28 ]. A significantly greater bonding strength of the self-etching system was confirmed in the studies of Bishara et al and Buyukyilmaz et al [ 17 , 29 ].…”

“…The strengths of bonding to dentin, especially bonding to the clinical relevant substrates, continue to drop as a function of time [28,29]. Durability of this bond relies on the quality of the interface between adhesive and dentin.…”
