Resistance of Haemonchus contortus to monepantel in sheep: first report in Espírito Santo, Brazil

Abstract: The objective of this study was to provide the first report of resistance of Haemonchus contortus to monepantel in sheep in Espírito Santo. The study was conducted in a property with history of monepantel use since 2014 and register of low efficacy in studies conducted over the past few years with fecal egg count reduction test. Lambs born on the property (males and females aged approximately 100 days) were selected and after eggs per gram of feces (EPG) analysis on fecal samples, these were divided into two g… Show more

“…Consequently, our understanding of the parasite regulation and dynamics of many parasite species remains relatively rudimentary [ 9 ]. Currently, anthelmintic resistance has been reported in China [ 10 ], the United States [ 11 ], New Zealand [ 12 ], Mexico [ 13 ], Australia [ 14 ] and Brazil [ 15 ]. However, there is no complete alternative to anthelmintic therapy; it is therefore necessary to utilize chemotherapeutic treatments to control GINs.…”

“…The intensive use of anthelmintics to control gastrointestinal nematodes has become an essential issue in many countries, especially related to the problem of resistance [9][10][11][12][13]. A number of countries, including Spain [14], China [15], India [16], New Zealand [17], and Brazil [18], have reported cases of anthelmintic resistance.…”

“…GIN control has been largely carried out through use of anthelmintics. However, excessive dependence on these substances has led to the development of anthelmintic resistance (Muchiut et al, 2018;George et al, 2021;Viana et al, 2021). It is important to understand the extrinsic factors that favor the development of anthelmintic resistance, as these have a direct impact on flock productivity (Waller, 2006).…”
