Resistance of trichostrongyles to benzimidazoles in Italy: a first report in a goat farm with multiple and repeated introductions

Abstract: Anthelmintic resistance is widely distributed in small ruminants throughout the world. The extension of resistance seems lower in southern European countries and has not been reported previously in Italy. In the present study, resistance to benzimidazoles, levamisole and ivermectin was evaluated in a multi-breed goat farm of southern Italy. The farm had a history of repeated goat introductions from other flocks and a moderate regimen of anthelmintic treatments using alternatively the three above-mentioned drug… Show more

“…on sheep farms in Italy. These results support what was reported by Cringoli et al (2007) on the presence of drug-resistant GIT affecting small ruminants in Italy. However, that report demonstrated resistance for benzimidazoles only, and solely for T. colubriformis affecting goats.…”

“…In the only studies carried out almost 15 years ago, no resistance to any of the three major anthelmintic classes was found (Genchi et al 1993) and, only recently, resistance to benzimidazoles in Trichostrongylus colubriformis has been reported in a goat flock (Cringoli et al 2007). The objective of this study was to determine if multiple drug resistance in GIT species affecting sheep is present in central Italy.…”

“…According to WAAVP recommendations, an evidence of development of resistance in GINs, particularly H. contortus and Trichostrongylus spp., against OXF preparations was found. Previously, benzimidazole resistance against these worms have also been reported in goats (Chartier et al 1995(Chartier et al , 1998Sissay et al 2006;Cringoli et al 2007). …”

“…However, since parasitic diseases caused by a number of helminth genera such as Teladorsagia, Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus and Dicrocoelium can have a major impact on small ruminant production in the region (Manga-González et al, 2001;Hoste et al, 2005;Rinaldi et al, 2007), effective control strategies can offer considerable economic benefits to small ruminant producers (Jordan and Perez, 1991;Cringoli et al, 2007). Control of these parasitic infections in small ruminants relies almost exclusively on dosing with anthelmintics.…”
