“…A single study of polyphenol-based prebiotic has been described in the treatment of acute diarrhea in children and adults seeking treatment at community health centers in Managua, Nicaragua ( 92 ). No diarrhea case defi nition (e.g., frequency or duration) for inclusion was reported; however, exclusion critieria included those with high fever, vomiting, severe dehydration, and bloody stools.…”

“…Short-term interventions have also been conducted, though with rather more questionable results, in part as inflammation processes are less likely to be altered drastically during short-term trials. However, children with gastroenterological discomfort receiving a novel polyphenol based prebiotic (2 ounces of Preliva (Goodgut INC, USA), rich in Japanese honeysuckle, grape, and pomegranate, among others) within a single dose in a placebo controlled trial experienced significantly less stomach pain and discomfort compared to the placebo group, though no bacteria cultures were measured and no dosing was reported [ 118 ]. More such studies, with preferably mid-long-term administration of polyphenols, are much desired.…”

“…Besides their beneficial role in modulating short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) or even intestinal IgA secretion ( 41 ), only a few interventional studies have been conducted to investigate the role of prebiotics against RV infection. However, because of their importance in early life, such as through human milk oligosaccharides or specific mixtures of short-chain galactooligosaccharides (scGOSs) and long-chain fructooligosaccharides (lcFOSs), which are widely used in infant formulas, prebiotics have been studied most in both preclinical ( 42 , 43 ) and clinical ( 44 , 45 ) studies involving RV infection.…”
