Resource and Placement Optimization for Multiple UAVs using Backhaul Tethered Balloons

Abstract: This paper studies the improvement of the achievable end-to-end data rate of ground users assisted with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and tethered balloons (TBs). The goal is to maximize the end-to-end throughput of a network suffering from the absence of terrestrial infrastructure. First, we solve an integer linear programming problem to optimize the associations. Then, we solve the UAVs' transmit powers optimally by converting the problem into a convex one. Subsequently, an efficient algorithm is proposed … Show more

“…Furthermore, in scenarios where the WSN location is not covered by any HAPS node, tethered balloons (TBs) can be used to connect the WSN (and other ground users and networks) to the HAPS network. TBs were proposed in several works as a means for connecting multiple ground sources (Alsamhi et al, 2020;Alzidaneen et al, 2019). As shown in Figure 1, in the absence of HAPS connectivity, TBs play an essential role in connecting the ground users and networks to the HAPS cloud.…”

“…They studied a problem of finding the placement locations of UAVs such that the energy consumption of the UAVs is minimized, where each user has a minimum data rate. Also, Alzidaneen et al [2] considered a network that consists of UAVs and tethered balloons, where UAVs can communicate with ground users while UAVs access the Internet by directly communicating with the balloons. It can be seen that the coverage area of the network is limited, since UAVs must be within the communication range of the tethered balloons.…”

“…In a recent work of ours [10], we proposed a downlink resourceallocation solution of integrated satellites, HAPs, and GBSs based on OFDMA to maximize user throughput considering back-hauling and access-link constraints. In another work [11], we proposed using TBs connected with optical fibers as backhauling stations to support ground users.…”
