Resource efficiency networks in the construction of new buildings

Abstract: This paper reports on a study to develop a construction resource efficiency stakeholder network in the UK. The primary stakeholders in the network were the client, designer and main contractor -the decision-makers on construction techniques, materials and products. The paper outlines the rationale for the study, development of waste-prevention measures and industrial networks, progressive implementation in three separate construction activities, barriers and practical constraints, key results, conclusions and … Show more

“…The demolition sub-contractors do not possess the knowledge and skills required for efficient and effective source separation and subsequent storage of salvaged waste (Jiménez-Rivero and García-Navarro, 2016). However, Williams et al (2014) highlighted that the workforce who engage in on-site sorting should be skilful and knowledgeable about the regulations and the procedure of on-site sorting. Training is essential for workers who engage in the entire RLSC to implement QA practices effectively and efficiently (Calvo et al, 2014).…”

“…Regardless of these disadvantages, most of the dismantling sub-contractors follow this technique since it is easy and less time-consuming. In most cases, dismantled waste is not sorted on sites (Williams et al, 2014). Consequently, the DW that reaches the off-site sorting facility is mostly commingled and contaminated (Huang et al, 2018).…”

“…The process of expansion and modernization of wastewater treatment plants should be carried out based on building materials and technologies dedicated to this type of investment. This also applies to the waste management process at the construction site, storage methods of the wastes as well as methods of their recycling [28,29,30]. The growing interest of the scientific community in the optimization methods of technological processes in WWTP (Waste Water Treatment Plants) and in the events of crisis character caused by external factors and by systemic factors inside the plant is a response to the existing state of affairs.…”
