This study examined the relationship between cultural biases and farmer-herder conflicts in Taraba State, Nigeria. The population was made up of 973 respondents comprising the households of selected farmers and herders in Taraba State. The sample size of210 was selected using purposive sampling procedure. The instrument for data collection was an 18-item questionnaire. One hundred and ninety-five (195) copies of the questionnaire were successfully retrieved and analysed. Mean and standard deviation was used to summarise the data. Findings indicated that cultural barriers which spots nomads as strangers in farming communities is among some aspects of cultural biases that promote farmer-herder conflicts in Taraba State. Government should come up with policies that will reduce the vegetative impact of cultural preferences and barriers. Keywords: Cultural biases, farmer-herder conflicts, socio-economic activities

This study follows up the previous studies conducted at the same location. The society structure developed in this village did not much different from the structure of Javanese villages in general, generally under the joint influence of Islam and the colonial. This village community developed into three family groups or local subcultural identity groups. The three groups are wong njero, wong njaba and wong mambu-mambu. Although it consists of various groups, but social life in this village is very harmonious. Therefore, the question of this study is: How do rural communities solve the various construction problems of locality subcultural identities in their daily lives? This study uses a qualitative approach to explore the meaning behind reality. The data collection process involves informants. They help to collect and clarifying field data or for cross checking field data. Data is analysed by flow models. The results showed that the amalgamation were originated from the marriage between one members of Wong Njero family and Wong Njaba, and minimizing the differences in background of local subculture.

Qualitative research is fundamental to understanding the nature and complexity of human phenomena. While cultural and psychometric validations exist for quantitative tools, the same cannot be said of qualitative ones. There are other many challenges when conducting a multinational qualitative study, which includes different cultural and linguistic ‘biases’. This paper presents some key issues researchers may encounter when designing and developing multinational and multicultural qualitative studies, and also provides some strategies to overcome difficulties and ensure rigor.
