“…The estimated carbon demands for the Arabian Sea intermediate water denitrification range from ca. 155 mg C m À2 d À1 (Naqvi et al 1996) to 346--518 mg C m À2 d À1 (derived from Banse 1994) to 519--2274 mg C m À2 d À1 (calculated from Ducklow 1993). During summer monsoon, bacterial production in 0--300 m column is reported to range from 148 to 223 mg C m À2 d À1 in the Somali Basin (Wiebinga et al 1997).…”

“…In previous studies, these higher dissolved oxygen values in the northern BoB were attributed to faster sinking of organic river-borne suspended matter. Ballasting of organic particles leads to less bacterial degradation within the water column due to the lower residence time of sinking particles (Naqvi et al, , 1996. Higher total suspended matter was reported in the northern BoB due to the influence of river discharge, as shown by the salinity decrease.…”

“…Active denitrification in the Arabian Sea is believed to be localized to the subsurface secondary nitrite (NO•) maximum (SNM), corresponding to a microbial activity maximum and light transmission minimum [Naqvi and Shailaja, 1993;. Strong differences exist between these two northern basins, with no SNM and little or no denitrification observed in the Bay of Bengal [Naqvi et al, 1996]. …”
