Respiratory disease in foals and the epizootiology of equine herpesvirus type 2 infection

Abstract: The epizootiology of equine herpesvirus type 2 (EHV-2) infection was investigated in Thoroughbred foals on a stud farm which in previous years had suffered economic loss due to respiratory disease. Sixteen pairs of foals and their dams were selected for this study and all of the foals became infected with EHV-2 by two to four months of age. These animals responded serologically to the virus infection as detected by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). EHV-2 infection persisted in these foals for two t… Show more

“…The infection of the three English foals might occur later but by the age of 12 to 16 weeks EHV-2 DNA was detected in the PBLs. These findings support other results, where EHV-2 was detected in nasal specimens by cocultivation for as long as 2 to 6 months of age [13].…”

“…9,23,24 However, experimental infection with EHV-2 has yielded variable results, and the virus can be isolated from a high percentage of sick and healthy horses worldwide. [24][25][26][27][28][29][30] Unfortunately, even less is known about EHV-5 and its role in causing disease. One of the earliest reports 31 of EHV-5 isolation was from horses with disease of the upper portion of the respiratory tract in Australia.…”

“…EHV-2 infection in young foals has been reported by others. 10,19 In the present study, samples were obtained from 11 foals from stable 1 3 times over a period of 6 months. All foals went through an active infection of EHV-2 (Fig.…”
