In a non-chiral environment, the enantiomers of a racemate possess the same physico-chemical properties but in the biological systems they possess different activities. One of the enantiomers may be more toxic or carcinogenic, and, therefore, the present data available on the toxicity and carcinogenesis of the racemic mixtures of these chiral pollutants are not reliable and need modification in terms of the enantioselective toxicity and carcinogenesis. It is essential to explore the enantioselective toxicity and carcinogenesis due to the different enantiomers of the chiral pollutants. The knowledge of the stereoselective metabolisms of the chiral pollutants may be useful for the treatment of cancer and other diseases. The enantioselective toxicity and carcinogenesis due to the chiral pesticides, pollutants and some drugs have been discussed in this review article.

“…These included a statistically significant decrease in serum levels of immunoglobulins A and M, reduced T-helper (Th) and increased T-suppressor cells (Ts) resulting in reduced Th:Ts cell ratio, persistent respiratory distress caused by Gram-negative bacilli-infected airways, and increased in-vitro lymphoproliferative responses of peripheral blood leukocytes to phytohaemaglutinin, concanavalin A, and pokeweed mitogens at 1 and 3 years after exposure. Furthermore, a reduced number of patients with positive skintest reactivity to streptokinase/streptodornase antigens was observed at 1 year after exposure, and to tuberculin antigens at up to 4 years after exposure (Lü & Wu, 1985;Nakanishi et al, 1985), while some other immunological effects persisted up to 30 years after exposure (Masuda, 2001).…”

initiated a programme on the evaluation of the carcinogenic risk of chemicals to humans involving the production of critically evaluated monographs on individual chemicals. The programme was subsequently expanded to include evaluations of carcinogenic risks associated with exposures to complex mixtures, lifestyle factors and biological and physical agents, as well as those in specific occupations. The objective of the programme is to elaborate and publish in the form of monographs critical reviews of data on carcinogenicity for agents to which humans are known to be exposed and on specific exposure situations; to evaluate these data in terms of human risk with the help of international working groups of experts in carcinogenesis and related fields; and to indicate where additional research efforts are needed. The epidemiology of melanoma is complex, and individual risk depends on sun exposure, host factors, and genetic factors, and in their interactions as well. Sun exposure can be classified as intermittent, chronic, or cumulative (overall) exposure, and each appears to have a different effect on type of melanoma. Other environmental factors, such as chemical exposures-either through occupation, atmosphere, or food-may increase risk for melanoma, and this area warrants further study.
