Respiratory Studies in Children I. Lung Volumes in Healthy Children, 6–14 Years of Age1

Abstract: Summary 1. The lung volume relationships in 93 children (50 boys and 43 girls) in the 6–14 year age group were studied. 2. The functional residual capacity (VFRC) was measured by a closed circuit method with helium as the test gas. The method was modified to a certain extent for use in children. 3. The vital capacity (Vvc) and its subdivisions, inspiratory capacity (VIC) and expiratory reserve volume (VER), were determined by spirometry in connection with the determination of the VFRC. The residual volume (VR)… Show more

“…Having excluded the 12 poor results, the mean values for the remain ing 26 boys and 24 girls (table I), agreed quite closely with the two most widely quoted series of helium dilution results [Engstrom et al, 1956, for Swedish school children, and H elliesen et al, 1958, for U.S. school children], but were a little greater than values obtained by the less satis factory closed-circuit oxygen rebreathing technique [R obinson, 1938; M orse et al, 1952].…”

“…ENGSTROM et al [14] demonstrated that a factor of height 2.68 gave the largest correlation coefficient; HELLIESEN et al [17] had found a factor of 2.91, and ENGSTROM et al [15] a factor of 3.103. In the present study, the regression curve of closest fit was not determined when the high correlation coefficient between TGV and body length3 was demonstrated.…”

“…TLC was predicted from standing height using separate equations for the adult and adolescent groups (13,14). Dm and Vc were predicted from TLC after Bucci, Cook, and Barrie's data (15) which included a wide age range (7-40 yr).…”
