This study aimed to determine the change in total genetic diversity after eight cycles of mass selection using a technique of selection index for yield, fresh dry matter, and weight of dry harvested cob, and to find out the average of these three characters compared to the initial population. This experiment was carried out at Pringgabaya District, East Lombok Regency using Randomized Block Design (RBD) with 11 treatments, namely eight selected populations, initial populations and two hybrid varieties. Each treatment was replicated 3 times, resulted in 33 experimental units. Data obtained were analyzed using analysis of variance at 0.05 levels. Variance of phenotype is obtained from the variety of samples; while the environmental variance is defined as the average variance of the two hybrid phenotypes. Genetic diversity is obtained from the variety of phenotypes of each population minus the environmental diversity. F-test of 0.05 was performed to find out whether the genetic diversity of the eighth cycle population is the same or different to that of the genetic diversity of the initial population. The average between the initial population and the eighth cycle population was tested using the HSD-test at 0.05 levels. The results showed that the total genetic variation in the population from the eighth cycle selection for yield, harvested dry weight of cobs, and fresh dry matter of maize were smaller than the genetic diversity of the initial population. The average yield, harvested dry cob weight and fresh dry matter weight of population of the eighth cycle selection are higher than the initial population

Biodiversitas 24: 11-19. Genetic diversity and gain quantitative characters of maize from index-based selection at dry land is poorly reported. This research aims to study the genetic diversity and gain of several traits quantitative of the index-based selection at two dry lands in Amor-Amor and Pererenan, Lombok, Indonesia. A randomized block design with three replications was applied to design the experiment. The materials used is maize from nine populations, namely eight populations from the selection of index-based and one from the initial population. The data were analyzed for variance at the 5% significance level. The results showed that the genetic diversity of yields was categorized as moderate, and the weight of dry cobs harvested per plant was narrow in both locations. The genetic diversity of fresh stover weight per plant in Pererenan was wider than in Amor-Amor, but still in the same category, which was medium. These three traits had a significant genetic gain in the moderate category for both locations, except for the weight of fresh stover per plant, which was high in Pererenan. The dry seed weight per plant had a moderate genetic diversity and gain with a significant positive phenotypic correlation with yield. Yield and fresh stover per plant can still be increased through index-based selection by using dry seed weight per plant and fresh stover per plant in both locations.

Sasaran kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah kelompok tani Lembah Telaga Desa Gumantar. Kelompok tani ini memiliki masalah kurangnya pengetahuan dan keterampilan teknik budidaya menggunakan sistem tanam jajar legowo yang dikombinasikan dengan pupuk organik serta saat pemupukan anorganik. Oleh karenanya, pengabdian dilakukan dengan tujuan meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan di bidang penanaman jagung dengan sistem tanam jajar legowo 2:1, penggunaan pupuk organik dan saat pemupukan anorganik dan mengetahui perbedaan hasil jagung dengan paket yang diperkenalkan dibanding hasil jagung cara petani. Metode pendidikan orang dewasa dengan teknik partisipatif digunakan dalam pengabdian ini, yakni melalui demplot. Dalam demplot diterapkan dua paket, yaitu paket I (teknologi yang diperkenalkan) dan paket II (cara petani). Pengabdian diawali dengan penyampaian materi, kemudian dilanjut dengan kunjungan dan panen pada demplot. Data yang diamati pada demplot, meliputi tinggi tanaman, jumlah daun, luas daun, panjang tongkol, diameter tongkol, bobot tongkol kering panen dan hasil. Uji t digunakan untuk pengujian kedua paket tersebut. Hasil pengabdian menunjukkan bahwa terjadi peningkatan pengetahuan petani di bidang penanaman dengan jajar legowo, penggunaan pupuk organik dan saat pemupukan dengan pupuk anorganik sebesar 36,99 persen. Hasil tanaman jagung lebih tinggi dengan paket teknologi dibanding cara petani, berturut-turut sebesar 3,565 kg per plot (6,366 t/ha) dan 1,613 kg per plot (2,880 t/ha) dan peningkatannya sebesar 121,04 persen.
