Response of a recurrent choroid plexus tumor to combination chemotherapy

Abstract: Choroid Plexus tumors are rare. Surgery and biopsy is diagnostic, and radiotherapy has been used as the treatment of choice for choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC) and recurrent choroid plexus papilloma (CPP). We report the first case of CPP responding to combination chemotherapy consisting of cisplatin, bleomycin and vinblastine (CBV). This chemotherapy regimen should be considered for future trials in patients with choroid plexus tumors and recurrence after surgery and/or radiotherapy.

“…Reports in the literature on the use of chemotherapy for choroid plexus tumors are rare. Maria et al [26] described a patient with recurrent choroid plexus papilloma who responded to a regimen of cisplatin, vinblastine, and bleomycin; the tumor was stable on CT scan 12 months after the start of chemotherapy. Kim et al [6] reported a patient with recurrent choroid plexus carcinoma treated with BCNU and 5-FU who improved clinically and whose CT showed stable disease at 10 months after beginning this regimen.…”

“…Chemotherapy, another form of adjuvant treatment, seems promising [15,32] but it is still in the experimental phase. It can follow radiotherapy or be used in all cases where radiotherapy is not indicated.…”

“…The schedule we used, based on a course of vincristine, carmustine, and teniposide, is not fully comparable to any other reported in the literature. Nevertheless vinka alcaloid and epipodophyllotoxin derivatives had been sporadically employed with some favourable result (3,10,11,19,20) (Table I). Such treatment was not associated with severe neurotoxicity.…”
