Response of Sweetpotato Cultivars to Linuron Rate and Application Time

Abstract: Field studies were conducted in 2015 and 2016 in North Carolina to determine the response of ‘Covington’ and ‘Murasaki-29’ sweetpotato cultivars to four rates of linuron (420, 560, 840, and 1,120 g ai ha–1) alone or withS-metolachlor (803 g ai ha–1) applied 7 or 14 d after transplanting (DAP). Injury (chlorosis/necrosis and stunting) to both cultivars was greater when linuron was applied withS-metolachlor as compared to linuron applied alone. Herbicide application at 14 DAP caused greater injury (chlorosis/nec… Show more

“…Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) has an important nutritional and forage value in the world due to its nutritional value, root tubers and leaves contain carbohydrates, proteins, carotenoids, flavonoids, anthocyanins, phenolic acids, potassium, iron, calcium, vitamins [1,2]. More than 100 million tons of sweet potato are produced annually in the world, more than 60% of world production falls on China [3,4]. Sweet potato has a high potential for the industrial production of flour, starch, ethanol, and as a raw material for the production of semi-finished products: dehydrated chips, cereals, jams, jellies, flour, and pasta [5,6].…”

“…With the extensive use of flumioxazin in sweetpotato, a need exists for registration of herbicides with alternative modes of action for the weed management programs to remain successful. Several herbicides have been evaluated for their potential use in sweetpotato production systems (Barkley et al 2016;Beam et al 2018aBeam et al , 2018bChaudhari et al 2018;Smith et al 2019). One potential alternative herbicide is bicyclopyrone, a member of the p-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase-inhibiting herbicide family (Dunne 2012).…”

“…Severe erosion is caused by the reliance on tillage for crop management and weed control. Before transplanting, the soil is disked and raised beds are formed using a tractormounted ripper bedder (Treadwell et al, 2007), followed by an average of three cultivations during the growing season to control weeds, and then the soil is turned over during harvest using a tractor-mounted implement with large disk turning plows (Beam et al, 2018). Tillage is a requirement in current sweetpotato production systems but is detrimental to soil structure and decreases soil organic matter content (Hou et al, 2012).…”
