Response of the temporomandibular joint tissue of rats to rheumatoid arthritis induction methods

Abstract: Background/purpose The pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA)-related temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder remains unclear. Studies have reported the change of the TMJ after complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) injection, which is consistent with osteoarthritis. However, few studies have reported that the tissue response of the TMJ in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) can mimic RA. The present study was aimed to investigate the TMJ response in rat models by CFA-induced arthritis and CIA to verify … Show more

“…Regarding to the anatomy of TMJ, it can be simply separated to two cavities by articular disc, upper and lower cavities. There are two kinds of synovial lining cells (the macrophage‐like type A and fibroblast‐like type B cells) and each kind of cell plays different characteristic including involve in the immune response, produce collagen and fluids to effect smooth jaw movement [60,61]. Recently, more and more studies try to clarify the change of synovial fluid of TMJ with internal derangement.…”

“…TMJ condyle could also be affected by these factors and result in condylar osteophytes or erosion. When these factors appears imbalance may associated with reduced TMJ internal derangement or even lead to TMJ bony structure change [55,61].…”

“…Acute TMJ Arthritis was established for evaluation of various treatment groups in vivo , based upon previous studies. 35 Briefly, thirty-six 8-week-old male SD rats were randomly divided into five groups: (1) Normal group (9 rats, 3 of which sacrificed on day 0, day 7 and day 14 respectively); (2) Saline group (9 rats, 3 of which sacrificed on day 0, day 7 and day 14 respectively); (3) 4-OI treated group (100 μg/mL; 6 rats, 3 of which sacrificed on day 7 and day 14 respectively); (4) Zn-NH-pyr treated group (equivalent to the concentration loaded with 100 μg/mL 4-OI; 6 rats, 3 of which sacrificed on day 7 and day 14 respectively); (5) 4-OI@Zn-NH-pyr treated group (equivalent to 100 μg/mL 4-OI; 6 rats, 3 of which sacrificed on day 7 and day 14 respectively). The emulsion of complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA, 5 mg/mL; 7023; Chondrex, Redmond, WA, USA) and Chick type II collagen (2 mg/mL; 20012; Chondrex, Redmond, WA, USA) was prepared in terms of the manufacturer's instructions.…”
