Response Surface Experimental Designs for Investigating Interspecific Competition

Abstract: Competition is an important interaction in ecology, and many experiments have been done to examine the effects of intraspecific and interspecific competition. Unfortunately, most of these experiments have been done using either substitution or additive experimental designs. Substitution designs, and to a lesser extent additive designs, severely limit the useful inferences that ecologists can draw from the resulting data. Response surface experimental designs, which vary the densities of two competing species i… Show more

“…The probability of species coexistence is estimated using a competition model under a range of simplified environments and is encapsulated by the competition coefficient parameter (Damgaard, 1998;Inouye, 2001). Estimating competition coefficients may improve predictions of persistence of crop alleles within weedy populations across generations and the success of hybrids within weedy populations over a growing season.…”

“…Specifically, we manipulated the density of Daphnia (0, 3, 9, 18, 27, 36 individuals per 200 ml experimental unit) and adult Mesocyclops (0, 1, 2, 4, 8 individuals per 200 ml experimental unit) in an orthogonal design, resulting in 30 unique treatments. This experiment followed a response-surface design by factorially manipulating the densities of two species [31]. The experiment was blocked temporally and three blocks were run in total with 24 experimental units per block.…”

“…Response surface designs have proved powerful for studies of interspecific competition (Inouye 2001) but have not been used to study intraspecific competition structured by presence/absence of a symbiont. Our response surface crossed starting densities of EÏ© and EÏȘ seeds, each ranging from 1 to 300, for a total of 66 treatments ( fig.…”
