Response-to-Failure Analysis of Global Food System Initiatives: A Resilience Perspective

Abstract: International food system initiatives have led the efforts to combat the threats to global food security resulting from the failure of the current food systems. This study set out to investigate and assess the contributions of global food system initiatives in tackling the food system challenges. In assessing the food system initiatives, we develop a three-step methodology for Food System Initiative (FSI) selection and then conduct a qualitative evaluation using relevant indicators based on food system failure… Show more

“…The results imply that adopting and national-wide implementation of different vegetarian diet concepts can substantially reduce diets' environmental and health impacts. Our results corroborate strongly with previous research of (8,9,15), who illustrated that the adoption of diets higher in plant-based than animal-based foods against the national Healthy US-style diet pattern would benefit the environment and the population's health. Furthermore, the results further reinforce previous research on the impact of diet on the environment and suggest that Vegetarian, Vegan, and Provegeterian diet pattern has the most sustainable impact on U.S. diet style.…”

“…Prominent among several concepts proposed are climate-smart agriculture, precision farming, Diet Guidelines for Americans, the Mediterranean diet, and the Eat Lancet Commissions diet recommendation of the Planetary Health Diet framework. Additionally, other diet patterns, sustainable agricultural production schemes, and global food initiatives have been fostered with varying resource consumption while improving human health and minimizing environmental impact (9). These concepts were formulated on the premise that a simple shift in diet behavior or pattern can lead to potential reductions in environment-health impact.…”

“…Food and nutrition insecurity has been an overarching global burden and an inextricable subject of concern in sustainable development. This challenge has attracted many advocacies through which contemporary approaches to promote availability, accessibility, safety, diversity, health, and food utilization have been instituted . Prominent among these approaches is the deployment of biotechnology to produce high-yielding and nutritious crops and animals and advanced postharvest technologies to enhance process efficiency and reduce food and nutrient loss, among others.…”

The concept of food waste valorization has existed for a long time; however, attention toward it has recently escalated due to increasing concerns on the detriments organic food wastes pose to the environment, especially to climate change, and the need to resolve them urgently.…”
