“…Experimental results showed that calves over 30 days of age, but still with MDA, responded as well as adult cattle to the oil-emulsified FMD vaccine. However, there was a 30-60 day delayed response in MDA free calves under 7 days of age vaccinated with this vaccine, which was suggested to be due to high levels of cortical hormones (Sadir et al, 1988).…”

“…These vaccines are less effective in pigs, and an oil adjuvant is used in pig FMD vaccines. However, in South America, oil adjuranted FMD vaccines are used in cattle, and it is claimed that these vaccines overcome the depressive effects of MDA (Sadir et al, 1988). Experimental results showed that calves over 30 days of age, but still with MDA, responded as well as adult cattle to the oil-emulsified FMD vaccine.…”

“…We have a selection bias due to the compulsory vaccination campaign applied in Argentina, as all non-vaccinated animals are between 6 and 18 months old. Data from our laboratory and others show that calves are immunologically identical to adult animals at this age (Sadir et al 1988;Spath et al 1995;Bucafusco et al 2014); thus, we do not expect an impact on antibody titres due to this bias. We cannot rule out, however, the role of IgMs, Nabs or high-affinity IgGs as a result of multiple vaccinations in the results obtained by either test.…”

“…Additionally, the immaturity of the immune system of neonates results in reduced or modified postvaccinal responses in many mammalian species (Fischer et al 2003). There are published reports indicating that passively acquired maternal antibodies block humoral but not cellular immune response after vaccination (Sadir et al 1988;Sandbulte and Roth 2004;Oliveira 2005) as well as reports suggesting they block both ones (Bouma et al 1998).…”
