Responses of stored‐product Anobiidae to pheromone lures and plant‐derived volatiles

Abstract: Experiments were conducted in different locations to investigate responses of adult Stegobium paniceum and Lasioderma serricorne (Col., Anobiidae) to different commercially available or prototype fabrications of their female‐produced sex pheromones. The results showed that the number of S. paniceum captured in traps baited with the commercially available lures was significantly higher than those captured in traps baited with the prototype stegobinone lures. The three commercially available brands of serricorni… Show more

“…A minor component of the sex pheromone, which is deposited by the female on the oviposition site, has been identified as an oviposition deterrent Imai et al 1990). Attractants and repellents have been examined in foods and plant derivatives (Kohno et al 1983;Hori 2003Hori , 2004aHori , b, c, 2005Mahroof and Phillips 2008b;Hori et al 2009). However, oviposition stimulants contained in stored food products have been poorly examined, other than ethanol extracts of tobacco and wheat flour (Fletcher and Long 1971;.…”

“…It is similar to L. serricorne attracted by chilli volatiles [8]. But there are differences between tobacco essential oils and chilli volatiles, there are come from host plant and another plant, respectively.…”

“…serricorne is major pests on a wide variety of dry and durable stored agricultural products [8]. There are many different traps baits of L. serricorne were reported to attract tobacco beetles, such as sex pheromone serricornin, red chilli powder, chilli volatiles, combining pheromone with plant-derived volatiles and other synthetic sex pheromone [5,[8][9][10][11].…”

“…However, concerns over environmental toxicity and observed resistance to certain fumigants in L. serricorne populations have forced a re-examination of control methods (Imai and Harada 2006). Currently, trapping techniques with pheromone attractants (anhydroserricornin and serricornin) or light traps, as well as application of either chemical or botanical insecticides/ repellants have been used as alternatives (Levinson et al 1981, Hori 2004, Mahroof and Phillips 2008. Exposing tobacco to extreme heat or cold for an extended period of time has also been used as a non-chemical form of treatment, as pesticide applications for tobacco products carry heavy restrictions (Runner 1919, Swingle 1938, Imai and Harada 2006.…”
