Restoration of dead wood in Basque stream channels: effects on brown trout population

Abstract: Streams in the Aiako Harria Natural Park (Basque Country, Spain) have excellent water quality, but are physically impoverished after centuries of snagging. In an attempt to restore channel complexity and ecosystem functioning, especially in-channel retention of sediments and organic matter, large woody debris (LWD) was introduced into four mountain streams (channel width 3-13 m) following a before ⁄ after, control ⁄ impact (BACI) design. Logs were introduced by means of hand-held machinery and located uncabled… Show more

“…Fish were sampled by electrofishing in June and December the year before and the 2 years after the restoration activity (Anton et al 2011). The entire reach was surveyed in the smaller streams (1-3), whereas only 100-m-long reaches were surveyed in the largest one (stream 4).…”

“…Stream salmonids may not only seek shelter in the streambed but also use stream wood, at least at temperatures of 1–13 °C (Culp, Scrimgeour & Townsend, ; Enefalk & Bergman, ; Enefalk et al ., ). Generally, the use of wood shelters is related to fish size, with salmonids <10 cm long using fine stream wood (FW < 10 cm in diameter; Culp et al ., ; Enefalk & Bergman, ) and avoiding large wood (>10 cm in diameter; Antón et al ., ; Langford, Langford & Hawkins, ). The effect of large stream wood on salmonid behaviour is relatively well described in the literature (Fausch & Northcote, ; Gustafsson, Greenberg & Bergman, ) while fewer studies have examined the effect of FW (but see e.g.…”

“…Moreover, salmonid responses to wood seem partly to be the result of an interplay between fish size and the dimension of the wood, as large wood (LW) attracts brown trout ( Salmo trutta ) ≥10 cm (Fausch & Northcote ; Antón et al. ; White et al. ), whereas a low abundance of small brown trout (<7 cm) is reported for LW accumulations (Langford et al.…”
