Results of five-year systematic screening for latent tuberculosis infection in healthcare workers in Portugal

Abstract: IntroductionThe risk of tuberculosis (TB) in healthcare workers (HCWs) is related to its incidence in the general population, and increased by the specific risk as a professional group. The prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in HCWs in Portugal using the tuberculin skin test (TST) and the interferon-γ release assays (IGRA) was analyzed over a five-year period.MethodsA screening programme for LTBI in HCWs was conducted, with clinical evaluations, TST, IGRA, and chest radiography. Putative risk f… Show more

“…Similar studies involving HCWs described high TST positivity rates, ranging from 26.7% to 69.5% [8-11]. Muzy de Souza (2000) reported 51% of TST positivity in HCWs in a general hospital in Rio de Janeiro, similar to the data of our study [10].…”

“…Muzy de Souza (2000) reported 51% of TST positivity in HCWs in a general hospital in Rio de Janeiro, similar to the data of our study [10]. The high prevalence of LTBI in this population of professionals is strongly associated to the presence of TB patients (diagnosed or not) at the workplace, which reflects the epidemiological situation of the disease in the community [11]. In a study conducted by Demkow et al .…”

“…In previous papers, TST and IGRA results were compared with respect to risk factors for LTBI [9,10]. Now the sample size has been increased from 1,218 to 2,884 HCWs for whom a direct comparison of TST and IGRA is possible.…”
