“…5 However, the amount of patients with long-term complete remissions remains low and is found in about 4 to 15%. 6,7,15 In our analysis of 35 patients treated with this triple drug therapy, the rate of objective remissions was 34.3% with a 1-and 3-year-survival rate of 76 and 32% and therefore comparable with the above mentioned studies. Variations of the triple drug regimen resulting in quite similar or controversial results have been reported in other series.…”

“…With this therapeutic strategy, objective remissions of ranging from 18 to 39% with a median survival of up to 24 months have been reported. 4,5,7,15 Recently, the analysis of a German trial comparing IL-2, IFN-a2a, and 5-FU versus tamoxifen revealed a 5-year survival rate of 25% for the chemoimmunotherapy arm. 5 However, the amount of patients with long-term complete remissions remains low and is found in about 4 to 15%.…”

“…Similar results have been reported in two studies of thirty‐four and fifty‐five patients 20,21 . However, other groups have demonstrated less impressive response rates, with objective responses reported between 2 and 19% 6,22–28 . There are several factors that may have influenced such discrepancies.…”

“…Interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon-α (IFN-α ) have been shown to have antitumor activity in MRCC and the addition of 5-FU has increased the effect of this combination. 7,8 To improve the results, a number of schedules combining the two cytokines with chemotherapy were developed, however, the combination produces high toxicity and high dose IL-2 requires hospitalization of the patient. 9 In vitro and in vivo studies suggest synergistic antitumor activity against renal cell cancer of IL-2 and IFN-α and use of combination reduces the dose of IL-2 and limits the toxicity.…”
