Results of on-site observations of landslide slopes of the Zagorsk pumped-storage station and reliability of geological forecasts

Abstract

Pumped-storage stations (PSSs) are highly complex objects from an engineering-geological viewpoint. The flatland Zagorsk PSS, located 30 km north of the city of Zagorsk, in the valley of the Kun'ya River, a left tributary of the Dubna River (basin of the Volga River), is the first such structure in the USSR.In the light of today's approach to ecological problems, it becomes necessary to assess the impact of PSSs on the environment. The change in the hydrogeological conditions as a whole with the creation of a PSS, the effect of a PSS on the redistribution of the subsurface flow, chemical composition of subsurface waters, water-logging of the territory, etc. -these are a general problem for all stations being constructed. The importance of the problem increases for the Zagorsk PSS, since problems related to slope stability acquire a decisive role, in addition to the problems related to a change in the regime of subsurface waters.
