Results of Partial Matrixectomy for Chronic Ingrown Toenail

Abstract: We recommend the Winograd technique with a few modifications especially for severe Stage 2 and 3 cases. Both loupe magnification and observation of soft tissue in the postoperative period were important details.

“…All these have variable rates of recurrence (2,5,7,15). Surgical approaches have been reported as the best option for treating stage II and III ingrown toenails, because conservative approaches, which have positive results for stage I, result in greater rates of failure and recurrence (1,3,7,11,15,16). It is important to note that a consensus on the best surgical technique for the treatment of ingrown toenails has still not been reached (1,8,17).…”

“…In most of the cases, the nail plate is the main problem; so partial excision of the nail plate with the addition of matrixectomy, to avoid recurrence, is the most performed and popular operative method for the treatment of ingrown toe nail. 7 The Winograd technique is a very popular technique for the treatment of ingrown toenail among podiatrists because of successful results. 4 In this study, the recurrence rate was 7.9% after the original Winograd technique.…”

“…The recurrence rate was 92% in the partial matrix excision group. In other studies, the recurrence rate of Winograd's procedure was 1.7-27% (4,5,11,(23)(24)(25).…”
