Triple pelvic osteotomy (TPO) is one of the main surgical procedures to prevent or modify the progress of degenerative joint disease (DJD) related with hip dysplasia in young dogs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of TPO in dogs. In this study, TPO were performed in 7 dysplastic cross-breed dogs in different gender (6 female and 1 male) and body weight (13.42±2.29 kg). In all cases, 20 degrees canine TPO plates were used. Before the operation, all cases were examined clinical, radiological and by computed tomographic. Postoperative 2 nd and 6 th weeks dogs were examined clinical, radiological and by computed tomographic and after 6 month both clinical and radiological examinations were performed. The joint laxity decreased 2 weeks after the operation. Dogs could walk on the treated leg after 2 weeks. The joint laxity decreased 2 weeks after the operation. Postoperatively dogs could walked on the treated leg after 2 weeks. The postoperatively measured Norberg angles (P<0.01) and acetabular anteversion angle (P<0.05) were significantly higher and distance between caput femoris and acetabulum was significantly lower (P<0.05) than preoperatively measurements. So, contact surface between the femoral head and the acetabulum had increased and the subluxation had disappeared. In radiographs obtained 6 months later, degenerative joint disease was not encountered. It was decided that canine hip dysplasia, could be treated successfully in young dogs via TPO, carried out before degenerative changes begin within the hip joints. Bu çalışmanın amacı, köpeklerde TPO'nun etkilerini araştırmaktır. Bu çalışmada, farklı cinsiyet (6 dişi, 1 erkek) ve vücut ağırlığındaki (13.42±2.29 kg) displazik 7 köpekte TPO yapıldı. Bütün olgularda, 20º canin TPO plağı kullanıldı. Operasyon öncesi tüm olguların klinik, radyolojik ve bilgisayarlı tomografi ile muayeneleri yapıldı. Köpekler operasyon sonrası 2. ve 6. haftalarda klinik, radyolojik, bilgisayarlı tomografik muayene ve 6 ay sonra hem klinik hem de radyolojik muayeneleri yapılarak takip edildi. Operasyondan 2 hafta sonra eklem gevşekliği azaldı. Köpekler operasyon sonrası 2 haftada tedavi edilen bacakları üzerinde yürüyebiliyorlardı. Postoperatif ölçülen Norberg açıları (P<0.01) ve asetabular antreversiyon açısı (P<0.05) preoperatif değere göre yüksekti ve kaput femoris ve asetabulum arasındaki mesafe belirgin olarak düşük bulundu. Bu nedenle, asetabulum ve kaput femoris arasındaki temas yüzeyi artarak, subluksasyon kayboldu. Altı ay sonra elde edilen radyografilerde, dejeneratif eklem hastalığına rastlanmadı. Bras. 29(8):625-631, agosto 2009 RESUMO.-Na tentativa de evitar algumas das dificuldades associadas à osteotomia pélvica tripla (OPT), foi desenvolvido experimentalmente o método de aplicação de cunha na junção sacroilíaca para aumentar a ventroversão acetabular. O objetivo deste estudo foi aplicar as técnicas de cunha sacroilíaca e OPT em cadáveres e avaliar radiograficamente a eficácia da ventroversão acetabular. Para tal, foram utilizados 10 cadáveres de cães, adultos, com 15-25 kg. Em cada hemipelve direita foi realizada OPT com placas de 20° e 40°. Na hemipelve esquerda foram aplicadas cunhas nas articulações sacroilíacas de 20° e 40°. Avaliações radiográficas em projeções ventrodorsais foram realizadas para mensuração da cobertura acetabular à cabeça femoral nas duas técnicas. De acordo com os dados obtidos pode-se observar que não houve diferença entre a técnica de OPT e o uso de cunha sacroilíaca utilizando implantes de 20° e 40°, mas ocorreu diferença significativa (p<0,05) entre os cães antes e após a aplicação dos implantes de 20° e 40°, e também entre os que receberam implantes de 20° e os de 40°. Attempting to avoid difficulties associated to triple pelvic osteotomy (TPO), the sacroiliac wedge method was experimentally developed to increase the acetabular ventroversion. The goal of this study was to apply the techniques of sacroiliac wedge and TPO to canine cadavers and radiographically evaluate the efficacy of acetabular ventroversion. Ten cadavers of adult dogs weighting 15-25 kg were used. To each right hemipelvis the technique of TPO with 20° and 40° plates was applied. In the left hemipelvis, 20° and 40º wedges in the sacroiliac joint were applied. Radiographic evaluations in standard projections were carried out for measurement of the acetabular covering of the head of the femur in the two techniques. There was no significant differences between TPO and the use of sacroiliac wedge using implants of 20° and 40°, however a significant difference (p<0,05) could be observed before and after application of the 20° and 40° implants, as well as between those that received 20° and of 40° implants. RESUMENEl objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar el uso de fijadores esqueléticos externos como medio de estabilización, mediante la técnica de doble osteotomía pélvica en pacientes displásicos. Se intervinieron cinco canes mestizos (3 machos y 2 hembras), de 3-4 meses de edad, con peso corporal entre 9.4 y 12.5 kg, clínicamente sanos. El ángulo de Norberg se determinó radiológicamente antes de la intervención y al retiro de los implantes en la semana 6. Se les hizo un seguimiento radiológico postquirúrgico semanal por cinco semanas para determinar la formación del callo óseo. El 80% (4/5) de los canes presentó signos radiológicos de formación de callo óseo a la segunda semana, y el 100% (5/5) presentó un callo óseo muy desarrollado asociado a un adecuado aporte de estabilidad mecánica en la semana 5 postoperatoria. Todos los canes presentaron en promedio 9.4 grados de aumento del ángulo de Norberg (rango: 4 a 14°).
