Results of the Italian neu_ART project

Abstract: The neu_ART project aims at developing state of the art transmission imaging and computed tomography techniques, applied to art objects, by using neutrons as well as more conventional X-rays. In this paper a facility for digital X-ray radiography of large area paintings on canvas or wooden panels and for the X-ray tomography of large size wooden artifacts, recently installed in a protected area, is presented. The results of a K-edge radiography facility that will soon be installed in the same area are also sho… Show more

“…Computed tomography (CT) gives additional information on the wooden panels, as it allows for the acquisition of three dimensional data sets reconstructed from a series of X-ray radiographs [73][74][75]. CT data allows to visualize wormholes, cracks and other features of the internal structure of panel paintings.…”

“…While the X-ray tube based instruments are too large to be easily transported into a gallery, an installation in a laboratory is possible and was realized in the Italian neu_ART project. This laboratory also contains facilities for conventional radiography of large paintings and X-ray tomography [75]. Energy resolved radiography can also be achieved by energy dispersive detection.…”

“…A scanner suited for the digital radiography of large paintings has been developed at "La Venaria Reale", the restoration centre in Turin (Italy) by the research group of INFN (National Institute of Nuclear Physics) and University of Turin [20,21]. But, in this case, the scanner is fixed because it is devoted to the use by restorers at the centre.…”

“…In this paper we would like to present the application of a CT instrument [19] specifically designed for the analysis of Cultural Heritage materials. This instrument has been developed within the neu_ART project [20] and installed in the Centre for Conservation and Restoration "La Venaria Reale": although it has already demonstrated its reliability and usefulness for the analysis of large artworks [21], however, thanks to its versatility both in energies and geometry, it proved suitable for the analysis of artefacts from an archaeological excavation too.…”
