Resveratrol: A potential challenger against gastric cancer

Abstract: Gastric cancer (GC) is the fourth most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality in the world. Late diagnosis and classical therapeutic approaches such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy make this disease a still threatening tumor. Genetic asset, environmental stress, dietary habit and infections caused by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) are the major causes concurring to GC initiation. A common mechanism is induction of radicals resulting in gastric mucosal injury. A regula… Show more

“…Resveratrol ( trans ‐3,4′,5‐trihydroxystilbene) is a naturally occurring phytoalexin which can be found in various plants, for example grapes. This compound is discussed to mediate numerous beneficial effects to human health, such as protection against morbus Alzheimer, macular degeneration as well as cancer . As this compound can be found in relatively high concentrations in red wine, it is claimed to be responsible for beneficial effects associated with a modest consumption of red wine (the so‐called French paradox).…”

“…Resveratrol is one of polyphenols found in grape and red wine. Experimental results from in vitro and in vivo reveal that resveratrol shows beneficial effects on antioxidant, cardiac protection, antitumor, and antiaging (Bhullar & Hubbard, ; Jiménez‐Osorio, González‐Reyes, & Pedraza‐Chaverri, ; Liu, Tsai, Tsai, & Yu, ; Raj et al, ; Ramis, Esteban, Miralles, Tan, & Reiter, ; Zulueta, Caretti, Signorelli, & Ghidoni, ). Zhang et al () pointed out that resveratrol reduces stem cell damage induced by ROS through activation of Sirt1/SOD2 antioxidant pathway.…”
