Resveratrol-loaded liposomes for topical treatment of the vaginal inflammation and infections

Abstract: Resveratrol (RES), chemically known as 3,5,4'-trihydroxy-transstilbene, is a promising multi-targeted anti-oxidative and antiinflammatory natural polyphenol. Preclinical studies showed its biological activities against the pathogens of sexually transmitted diseases causing vaginal inflammation and infections. Due to its low solubility and poor bioavailability, the optimal therapeutic uses are limited. Therefore, a clinically acceptable topical vaginal formulation of RES exhibiting optimal therapeutic effects i… Show more

“…As previously observed [28,46], plain-LP exhibited a zeta potential close to neutral (Table 1) because phosphatidylcholine is a zwitter ionic lipid that can acquire slightly negative values in distilled water, as a result of the orientation of lipid headgroups and formation of a hydration layer around vesicles [47]. Liposomes incorporating Q and/or GA were more negative than plain-LP (p < 0.05), coherently with the fact that both Q and GA were negatively charged in water (−18.5 ± 0.6 mV and −14.3 ± 0.7 mV, respectively).…”

“…The testing was performed at neutral pH, mimicking the conditions of an infected vagina. Based on our previous work with chitosan-coated vesicles, we expected that the mucoadhesiveness of the chitosomes would not be affected by the pH [39]. All the polymer-containing liposomes sonicated for one minute exhibited a sustained release of metronidazole compared to the control solution.…”

“…Various strategies have been followed to improve the delivery of drugs through the vagina, and among these is the use of nanoparticulate carriers based on lipids. 7,8) The liposome can be used as a vehicle for administration of incorporated drugs and can provide controlled release of drug. Liposomes are most often composed of phospholipids which has a potential as a vaginal delivery system.…”
