Rethinking Texture Mapping

Abstract: The intrinsic problems of texture mapping, regarding its difficulties in content creation and the visual artifacts it causes in rendering, are well‐known, but often considered unavoidable. In this state of the art report, we discuss various radically different ways to rethink texture mapping that have been proposed over the decades, each offering different advantages and trade‐offs. We provide a brief description of each alternative texturing method along with an evaluation of its strengths and weaknesses in t… Show more

“…Alleviating the effect of seams Our strategy is to strive to reduce the number of seams in photogrammetry models. A class of orthogonal alternative strategies, surveyed in [YLT19], consists instead in attenuating some or all of their many detrimental effects , such as the need for texel duplication (e.g. [LH06]) and vertex duplication (e.g.…”

“…Texture mapping is a powerful technique that has traditionally been used to add realism to computer graphics images [21]. In its basic form, texture mapping lays an image (the texture) onto an object in a scene.…”

“…Finally, textures without uv-maps can be used to add details terrains by displacement mapping [28], but only few texturing methods can be applied to introduce real 3D features. Hyper-textures [20,6] often based on noise [19] allow the synthesis of a theoretically infinite amount of volumetric details.…”
