Retinal detachment in developing countries

Abstract: Treatment of retinal detachment has been a low priority in developing countries. It is thought to be less common in India and Africa than in Europe and N America. The aetiology and presentation of retinal detachment in the Third World are affected by genetic and environmental factors. In general, patients are more likely to present late, and complex detachments are relatively more common. Despite these problems, the results of surgery are encouraging, with more than 80% final anatomical success, and over 60% o… Show more

“…This poor preoperative vision may be as a result of delay in presentation as has been noted previously [8] [9]. Also, the fact that all the eyes but one in our series had macular involvement at presentation explains the poor vision.…”

“…Blunt ocular trauma is a leading cause of RRD in children and adolescents (10) and it is an important cause of RD in Africa (6). Retinal breaks resulting from blunt traumas are usually due to compression of the globe along its antero-posterior diameter with compensatory expansion at the equatorial plane.…”

“…In the United States (2,3) and Europe (4,5), an annual incidence of retinal diseases or retinal detachment (RD) between 6 to 12 per 100,000 population per year have been reported. Population-based surveys on the incidence of RD in developing countries are scarce (6) and little is known about the incidence of retinal detachment in Africa (7).…”

“…Surgery for retinal detachment is very effective in developing countries such as India and East Africa. 9 A significant number of patients also presented with retintis pigmentosa, retinal vascular occlusions, sickle cell retinopathy, couching, intraocular foreign body, and pseudophakos dislocated into the vitreous (see Table 1). It is likely that the incidence of vitreoretinal disease will increase, with the increasing number of cataract surgery causing more posterior segment complications.…”
