RETRACTED ARTICLE: A histopathological analysis of the epidemiology of coronary atherosclerosis: an autopsy study

Abstract: BackgroundAtherosclerosis accounts for a large proportion of cardiovascular system associated morbidity and mortality. We studied the possible association between the histopathological changes of the coronary atherosclerotic lesions and the risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) using autopsy cases.MethodsWe performed an autopsy analysis (n = 13, 4 women, 9 men mean age 67.5 years; age range 56–93 years) of SCD which occurred in patients aged over 50 years during March 2010 to December 2013. The following variable… Show more

“…Endothelial cells are vital for the maintenance of the functional integrity of the vascular wall and nonthrombogenic blood-tissue reactions and serve as modulators of immune responses [ 3 ]. Furthermore, endothelial dysfunction is a primary contributing factor to several cardiovascular diseases [ 4 , 5 ]. Indeed, there is a clear correlation between the atherosclerotic burden and various other risk factors due to the extent of endothelial dysfunction [ 3 ].…”

“…Sabe-se que o exame de autópsia é de extrema importância, pois permite a compreensão dos processos básicos das doenças. 4 Estudos têm demonstrado que além da eliminação dos fatores de risco associados à aterosclerose existem medicamentos atualmente eficazes para o tratamento dessa doença. 5 No entanto, para a eficácia do tratamento é necessário conhecer o grau de comprometimento arterial provocado pelas placas ateroscleróticas.…”
