RETRACTED ARTICLE: Menière’s disease: combined pharmacotherapy with betahistine and the MAO-B inhibitor selegiline—an observational study

Abstract: The achievement of the same clinical effect with a significantly lower (about 1/5) dosage of betahistine can be explained by the inhibition of the MAO-B by selegiline leading to higher serum concentrations of betahistine. This approach is in line with recent developments to bypass the first-pass effect of betahistine by transbuccal or intranasal application. Despite the substantial methodological limitations of such an observational study, this combined pharmacotherapy could be an alternative to a high-dosage … Show more

“…Since it is used in daily life, the ecological validity might be improved compared to many currently available questionnaires which are administered once a week at most. These aspects will likely be very valuable when investigating the effect of therapies for vestibular disorders, especially in cases of fluctuating symptoms like in Menière's disease [40,53]. In the future, it could open doors to ecological momentary interventions, which take place in real time and in real world [54].…”

“… 18 The enzyme monoaminoxidase B (MAO-B) converts betahistine into aminoethylpyridine, hydroxyethylpyridine and mainly 2-pyridylacetic acid (2-PAA). 23 The effect of 2-PAA, however, differs in comparison with unmetabolized betahistine on cochlear microcirculation. In a study by Bertlich et al, 16 2-PAA proved non-effective in increasing cochlear blood flow compared to its precursor.…”

“…The authors have retracted this article [1] because it erroneously gives the impression that the results presented were based on a clinical trial, when in fact the patients treated in this observational study underwent so-called "individuelle Heilversuche" (individual patient treatment). "Individuelle Heilversuche" is a type of medical treatment that deviates from the established medical standard.…”
