Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery in Patients Who Previously Underwent Open Renal Stone Surgery

Abstract: Purpose. To ascertain whether retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) is as effective in patients treated previously with open renal stone surgery (ORSS) on the same kidney as in patients with no previous ORSS. Methods. There were 32 patients with renal stones who had previous ORSS and were treated with RIRS in the study group (Group 1). A total of 38 patients with renal stones who had no previous ORSS and were treated with RIRS were selected as the control group (Group 2). Recorded data regarding preoperative ch… Show more

“…Alkan et al [49] compared 32 and 38 patients with and without a history of open renal stone surgery, respectively. SFRs were 100% and 95% after second procedure, and clinically insignificant residual fragment (≤4 mm) rates were 29% and 20% for patients with and without history of surgery, respectively.…”

“…Advances in surgical techniques and urological devices have made minimal invasive surgery for kidney stones more preferred in recent years. Shock wave lithotripsy, retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS), and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) have replaced open kidney stone surgery in many cases [ 1 ]. Which treatment should be chosen for which stone in the kidney is of critical importance.…”
