Retroperitoneal tumour infiltration detected by bone scanning in patients with infiltrating lobular carcinoma of the breast

Abstract: Radionuclide bone scans performed in some patients with carcinoma of the breast showed abnormal retention of isotope in the renal pelvis which developed and progressed during the period of follow-up after mastectomy. This phenomenon was seen in 15 of 30 patients with infiltrating carcinoma of the breast (ILC) but in none of 29 with infiltrating duct carcinoma (IDC). Autopsies were performed in eight of the patients with ILC and three of those with IDC. Diffuse retroperitoneal and ureteric infiltration was seen… Show more

“…In contrast to abundance of literature on histological and clinical aspects of ILC, there is, to the best of our knowledge, only one systematic study about the comparative metastatic pattern of ILC and IDC [23]. This is surprising, since there are several clinical reports on metastases from the breast carcinoma to the gastrointestinal tract [37][38][39][40], to the endomyometrium and cervix [38,41,42], to the ureteral wall [43,44], and to retroperitoneum [45]. In some of these reports, ILC is highlighted as the specific type of metastasizing carcinoma.…”
