Retrospective study of rabies epidemiology in Ukraine (1950-2019)

Abstract: During many decades, rabies remained endemic on the territory of Ukraine. In certain historical periods, the epizootic process of rabies developed with the alternate inclusion of different species of animals as a source and a reservoir of the virus which are of great interest to many scientists. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to conduct an analysis of rabies epidemiology on the territory of Ukraine from 1950 to 2019 based on collected reliable archival data. Collected archival data have shown that ove… Show more

“…Foxes were allocated into a separate group because of their main role as a rabies reservoir. Dogs and cats (both domestic and stray) were combined into one group as they are a major source of human rabies infection in Ukraine (19,25). The percentage of positive samples with an exact binomial confidence interval in each group was calculated Fig.…”

“…1) compared to other regions. The higher density of cases in Vinnytsia and other southwestern regions may be influenced by the larger fox population (24,25,31). The lower density of rabies cases in the western regions near the border with EU countries (especially the Zakarpattia oblast) may be partially explained by the mountainous environment, which can influence fox presence and density, and may limit the movement of wild animals, resulting in a slower progression of rabies.…”

“…Many existing models that study the spread of rabies virus in Europe are associated with the appearance of rabies in one species, namely the red fox (Borchering et al, 2012). However, in Eastern Europe, especially in Ukraine, rabies continues to spread equally through foxes and domestic carnivores (Makovska et al, 2020). As reported by Drozhzhe (2015), over the past decade, our country, together with neighbouring countries such as the Russian Federation, Republic of Belarus, and Romania, has formed the epicentre of rabies, which accounted for up to 90% of all European countries.…”
