Return Migration and Geography of Innovation in MNEs: A Natural Experiment of On-the-Job Learning of Knowledge Production by Local Workers Reporting to Return Migrants

Abstract: I study whether return migrants facilitate knowledge production by local employees working for them at geographically distant R&D locations. Using unique personnel and patenting data for 1315 employees at the Indian R&D center of a Fortune 500 technology firm, I exploit a natural experiment where the assignment of managers for newly hired college graduates is mandated by rigid HR rules and is uncorrelated to observable characteristics of the graduates. Given this assignment protocol, I find that local employee… Show more

“…These differences, however, are far from statistically significant and are at best indicative of what might lie ahead as bigger samples and longer time horizons emerge. We also believe that truly answering these questions requires marrying patent data with cross‐border employment records for multinational firms (Choudhury, ) to provide a more comprehensive view of inventor teams and mobility.…”

“…These papers also outline the longer earlier literature. Choudhury (2014) and Choudhury and Khanna (2014) flip the lens around and demonstrate in India how the movement of resources and labor in multiunit and multinational firms affects the innovation of the local areas in which these firms operate.…”

“…The effect of migration on source countries received less attention. Kerr (2008) and Choudhury (2015) find that source countries benefit from knowledge flows and return migration and consequently increase patenting and innovation. Kaiser et al (2015) provide firm-level evidence by looking at worker mobility within Denmark.…”
