AimTo investigate the acceptablility of a pilot scheme of revalidation to general dental practitioners. Method Ten general dental practitioners completed portfolios of evidence of being up to date and fit to practise. This portfolio was assessed by a panel of three experts, using an assessment tool developed specifically for that purpose. An action research methodology was used to evaluate participants' perceptions, consisting of a focus group and semi-structured interviews. The views of the assessors on the portfolio and its assessment were collected using a questionnaire. Results The views of the participants on revalidation, the pilot scheme portfolio and its use, who should assess it and how its use could be supported were collected. Also areas of difficulty in using the portfolio were identified, along with suggestions for improving it and alternative ways of evidencing competence. Assessors noted that the quality of evidence was adequate, but also made suggestions for improvement of the portfolio. ConclusionsThe pilot scheme appears to have been acceptable to the dentists in this scheme, given some caveats. The assessors felt that appraisal would significantly enhance any substantive scheme.

Résumé -Contexte : Dans la formation post graduée en soins de santé, les port folios sont utilisés pour soutenir la pratique réflexive, pour fournir une évaluation sommative, pour faciliter les procédures de gestions des connaissances, et sont considérés comme un lien essentiel entre les apprentissages au niveau individuel comme au niveau des organisations. Cette revue systématique rassemble les preuves de l'efficacité des portfolios dans la formation post graduée en soins de santé et examine les implications de la migration du portfolio papier vers le port folio électronique dans tous les milieux professionnels. Méthode : Une revue de la littérature a été conduite sur les articles décrivant l'utilisation d'un portfolio pour l'apprentissage aussi bien dans le milieu du travail que dans celui de la formation professionnelle. Elle a été conçue pour avoir une haute sensibilité et a été conduite sur un large éventail de sources publiées ou non publiées relevant de la formation professionnelle. Aucune limite concernant la conception des études ou les résultats, ni le pays d'origine ou la langue n'a été définie. Une évaluation de la qualité, par paire, en aveugle, a été effectuée et l'évaluation détaillée de l'extraction de données à partir des d'articles inclus était gérée à l'aide d'un outil en ligne développé spécifique-ment pour l'étude. Les résultats ont été discutés en profondeur par l'équipe, pour identifier et regrouper les thèmes pertinents afin de répondre aux questions de recherche. Résultats : Cinquante six articles de 10 pays impliquant sept professions de santé ont répondu à nos critères d'inclusion, et à un seuil minimal de qualité ; il s'agissait le plus souvent d'études observationnelles non contrôlées. Les portfolios encourageait la réflexion pour certains groupes, et facilitait l'engagement dans l'apprentissage. Objectives The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on the use of a portfolio and discuss the evidence for the impact of a portfolio on professional practice, in particular pharmacy practice. Method A literature review was performed using databases from health care and education, namely AMED, BEI, CINAHL, Embase, ERIC, IPA, MedLine, PHARM-LINE, PsycInfo, TIMELIT and ZETOCs, as well as a manual search of relevant journals and documents between 1991 and 2007. The search terms included portfolio, progress files and assessment, and these were linked with pharmacy. Articles were included in the review if they had a focus on the portfolio as a contribution to professional practice. Key findings Portfolios have been used in the education field for over decade. A total of 26 out of 1901 papers were identified which examined portfolios in a post-registration setting. The majority of these publications were from medicine (12), with education (six), pharmacy (five) and nursing (three) making up a small proportion. Portfolios were seen as (a) a tool for use in feedback, (b) a useful trigger for reflection and (c) a link between academic learning and practice. A similar set of findings were seen in the educational context. In addition, a portfolio (a) requires motivation to record and (b) can change behaviour towards colleagues. Conclusions There is still confusion about the meaning of a professional portfolio in health care professions. It is suggested that portfolios should be classified according to a modified system from the teaching profession. The evidence that portfolios can contribute to practice is limited. This review suggests the need for more studies into the impact of portfolios on professional practice, in particular in a pharmacy context.
