Reversal of Multidrug Resistance in Human Colon Cancer and Human Leukemia Cells by Three Plant Extracts and Their Major Secondary Metabolites

Abstract: Background: We studied the effect of three plant extracts (Glycyrrhiza glabra, Paeonia lactiflora, Eriobotrya japonica) and six of their major secondary metabolites (glycyrrhizic acid, 18β glycyrrhetinic acid, liquiritigenin, isoliquiritigenin, paeoniflorin, ursolic acid) on the multidrug resistant human colon cancer cell line Caco-2 and human leukemia cell line CEM/ADR 5000 as compared to the corresponding sensitive cell line CCRF-CEM, and human colon cancer cells HCT-116, which do not over-express ATP-bindin… Show more

“…Generally, combining multiple drugs allows for the use of lower doses of conventional chemotherapeutical drugs, which may lead to the same or even higher efficacy due to synergism and lower resistance [5,6]. Plants and their diverse secondary metabolites, among them polyphenols, are an interesting source for the study and development of drugs to treat cancer [7]. The honeysuckle family, Caprifoliaceae, contains 42 genera, among them the genus Scabiosa [8].…”

“…In addition to the same pharmacological effect as licorice, ILQ also exerted antidiabetic and antispasmodic activities [15,16]. Recently, multiple studies had investigated the effect of ILQ on cancers, and ILQ has exhibited profound antitumor abilities against breast cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, colon cancer, cervical cancer, prostate cancer, endometrial cancer, and so on [17][18][19][20][21][22]. So far, the direct target of ILQ in tumor cells has not been elaborated, but several nonspecific mechanisms modulated by ILQ have been reported.…”
