Reverse flow in the umbilical vein in a case of trisomy 9

Abstract: This report describes a case of reverse flow in the umbilical vein and ductus venosus during atrial contraction of a fetus at 12 weeks of gestation with increased nuchal translucency (9.1 mm). In addition, Doppler velocimetry detected high retrograde flow in the inferior vena cava. Cytogenetic analysis of chorionic villi revealed trisomy 9. We suggest that these findings may be a first trimester sign of chromosomal and cardiac abnormalities in the fetus.

“…Recently, several investigators noted a correlation between alterations in the venous Doppler flow profiles and the presence of chromosomal abnormalities [10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. Some reported either reversed flow in the ductus venosus during atrial contraction [10][11][12][13][14][15] or in the umbilical vein [16] of fetuses with increased NT.…”

“…Some reported either reversed flow in the ductus venosus during atrial contraction [10][11][12][13][14][15] or in the umbilical vein [16] of fetuses with increased NT. These observations sug- gest not only the possibility of cardiac insufficiency in fetuses with chromosomal abnormalities, but also the potential for early detection by venous Doppler.…”
