Reversible data hiding: Advances in the past two decades

In the past two decades, reversible data hiding (RDH), also referred to as lossless or invertible data hiding, has gradually become a very active research area in the field of data hiding. This has been verified by more and more papers on increasingly wide-spread subjects in the field of RDH research that have been published these days. In this survey paper the various RDH algorithms and researches have been classified into the following six categories: 1) RDH into image spatial domain, 2) RDH into image compressed domain (e.g., JPEG), 3) RDH suitable for image semi-fragile authentication, 4) RDH with image contrast enhancement, 5) RDH into encrypted images, which is expected to have wide application in the cloud computation, and 6) RDH into video and into audio. For each of these six categories, the history of technical developments, the current state of the arts, and the possible future researches are presented and discussed. It is expected that the RDH technology and its applications in the real word will continue to move ahead.

Recently, reversible data hiding (RDH) techniques for JPEG images have become more extensively used to combine image and authentication information conveniently into one file. Although embedding data in JPEG image degrades visual quality and increases file size, it is proven to be useful for data communication and image authentication. In this paper, a data hiding method in JPEG image using a new coefficient selection technique is proposed. The proposed scheme embeds data using the histogram shifting (HS) method. According to the number of zero AC coefficients, block ordering is used to embed data first in the blocks causing less distortion. In order to further reduce the distortion, positions of AC coefficients are selected carefully. Finally, AC coefficients valued +1 and −1 are used for embedding, and the remaining non-zero AC coefficients are shifted to the left or right directions according to their sign. Compared to the current state-of-the-art method, experimental results show that the proposed method has higher peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and smaller file size.

This paper proposes a novel rotational method on AC coefficient pairs to embed data into a JPEG compressed image. The purpose is to improve the carrier capacity of [1] while maintaing its original feature in controlling quality degradation. The proposed method exploits two properties in the quantized AC coefficients, namely, large magnitude and short run of zeros for low frequency subbands, and vice versa. The coefficients are first grouped into pairs and then rotated to the left or right directions to create distinctive states, where each can be utilized to represent external data. The AC coefficients are not modified and no additional AC coefficients are introduced for data embedding. However, preprocessing is needed so that all blocks satisfy the properties assumed to ensure correct data extraction and image recovery. The proposed method is rewritable because the host image can be re-utilized without causing further distortion. Experiments were conducted to verify the basic performance of the proposed method. On average, the proposed method is able to embed up to ∼9318 bits in the test images of quality factor 80.
