Review of Ammonium Chloride–Water Solution Properties

Abstract: Ammonium chloride is commonly used as a buffer solution to control pH levels in a wide variety of chemical and medical applications and is also used as a fertilizer because it acts as a sufficient source of nitrogen for the soil. More recently it is used to create an experimental benchmark, useful to model/simulate metal solidification. In electronics and metallurgy it is also used for cleaning, to prevent the formation of oxides during welding or smelting of metals. In the literature different values are avai… Show more

“…Here, Ca 2+ and SO 4 2− , Na + and F − , NH 4 + , and Cl − are grouped ( Figures 6A,D, 7A). It appears that we have the following salts precipitating during the shock-freezing of the artificial snow: NaF at −3 • C, CaSO 4 and NH 4 Cl at −15 • C as predicted by salt-water binary phase diagrams (Purdon and Slater, 1946;Melnikov, 1997;Lewis et al, 2010;Thomas and Dieckmann, 2010;Stefan-Kharicha et al, 2018). These ions-pairs may stay close also during the metamorphism experiments.…”

“…Note that the viscosity and the diffusivity of the water solutions also depend on the NH 4 Cl concentration. 31 On the other hand, certain reactions, such as hydrolysis and oxidations, must be considered during the polymerization processes. These reactions are responsible for incorporating oxygen into the macrostructure, which together with some elimination reactions, such as deamination, denitrogenation and dehydrocyanation, lead to weight changes related to the total initial mass input in the system (initial weight of NaCN plus NH 4 Cl).…”

“…This yielded a saturation temperature of T sat = 28 • C . Stefan-Kharicha et al (2018a) recently gave a review of the material properties of the NH 4 Cl-H 2 O system. To visualize fluid velocity and temperature simultaneously, two to three drops of TLC slurry (SLN40/R21C5W, LCR-Hallcrest) per 400 mL were added to the solution.…”
