Review of Experiences within Ice and Iceberg Management

Abstract: A review of existing knowledge regarding how to manage ice during offshore work in cold waters has been carried out. The objective has been to contribute to increased safety and efficiency in future projects by learning from world-wide experiences. It was found that offshore drilling has been carried out in a wide range of ice conditions and at water depths spanning from five metres to more than a thousand metres. Icebergs in open waters have been handled safely over several years and the possibility of detect… Show more

“…Increased presence fueled by economic interests in the Arctic, has for several decades [21] called for research in the field of Ice Management. A comprehensive overview of Ice Management in practical use is provided in [5]. The field deals with the detection, tracking and forecast of ice, but also the physical actions taken to avoid collisions [5].…”

“…A comprehensive overview of Ice Management in practical use is provided in [5]. The field deals with the detection, tracking and forecast of ice, but also the physical actions taken to avoid collisions [5]. While managing ice is of great importance to polar ventures, predicting ice movement has proven difficult [6], concluding that observations are essential for tracking.…”

“…Eik (2008) defines IM as the sum of all activities where the objective is to reduce, or avoid, actions from any kind of ice features. This includes detection, tracking, and forecasting of sea-ice, ridges, and icebergs.…”

“…As offshore activities move into Arctic waters, where sea-ice and icebergs may threaten installations and structures, ice management (IM) becomes an important part of the offshore operation. An important part of an IM system, is the detection, tracking, and drift forecasting of ice features (Eik, 2008). Eik and Løset (2009) discussed requirements for one or more unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV), preferably untethered due to sea-ice interaction with the tether, for tracking of icebergs detected by stationary sensor platforms, and for continuous monitoring of an area upstream of a protected installation.…”
