Review of Meteorological Drought in Africa: Historical Trends, Impacts, Mitigation Measures, and Prospects

Abstract: This review study examines the state of meteorological drought over Africa, focusing on historical trends, impacts, mitigation strategies, and future prospects. Relevant meteorological drought-related articles were systematically sourced from credible bibliographic databases covering African subregions in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries (i.e. from 1950 to 2021), using suitable keywords. Past studies show evidence of the occurrence of extreme drought events across the continent. The underlying mechanis… Show more

“…Moreover, the frequency and intensity of severe precipitation events have shown an increasing trend after 1950s across the various regions worldwide due to many natural and human-caused factors. This irregular change in annual precipitation and occurrence of frequent heatwaves have led toward ecological drought events in various regions due to increased evapotranspiration ( Jiménez-Donaire et al, 2020 ; Ayugi et al, 2022 ). Decline in global monsoon precipitations has been observed between 1950s and 1980s which could partially be attributed to human-induced Northern Hemisphere aerosol emissions.…”

“…The Mann-Kendall (MK) test is a nonparametric approach for testing the significance of monotonic trends, linear or nonlinear, in time series data. The method has been widely used to detect trends in hydrometeorological data [9,59]. MKtrend test is expressed by Equation (1):…”

“…Therefore, bias correction is herein introduced to obtain a reliable future projection of drought characteristics over the region. This information is needed for devising effective adaptation and mitigation strategies in the region that has remained a drought hotspot and vulnerable to its effects (Trisos et al 2022 ; Ayugi et al 2022 ). This study uses the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) to build an accurate drought map for EA.…”
