Review of Recent Research about Parenting Generation Z Pre-Teen Children

Abstract: The purpose of this scoping review is to provide a timely update of available research describing parents’ perspectives of parenting pre-teen children of Generation Z (born 1997 through 2012). “…Notwithstanding that this is a cross‐sectional study, which, therefore, prevents claims that the observed differences between parents of pre‐teens and parents of older or younger children are due to intra‐person transitions in the parenting experience rather than cohort effects, we believe this study elucidates novel understandings about the experience of parenting during an often‐overlooked period of life. In adopting a descriptive and pan‐theoretical approach, this paper addresses an identified gap in pre‐teen research (Oerther & Oerther, 2021). In particular, this paper presents novel findings from the parent perspective regarding parents' understandings and concerns in the pre‐teen years, with the added benefit of these perspectives coming from a heterogeneous and broadly representative national (Australian) sample.…”

“…The pre‐teen years involve rapid physical, neurodevelopmental and social change that is important for later mental health and well‐being (Collins & Madsen, 2019; Evans‐Whipp et al, 2017). However, relative to other stages of child development, less is known about parents' experiences, perceptions, strengths and challenges during this pivotal time in family life (Oerther & Oerther, 2021). Consequently, parents may be unprepared for the challenges emerging around early adolescence, and support providers may be unaware of opportunities to support parents at this time.…”

“…Beberapa penelitian terdahulu terkait Gen Z mengambil perspektif orangtua dan guru (Oerther & Oerther, 2021;Seemiller & Grace, 2017;Swanzen, 2018). Dalam penelitian ini, fokusnya adalah perspektif Gen Z tentang bagaimana pola komunikasi keluarga yang mereka alami.…”
