In this study, we have explored the relationship between the cultivation method and the concentration of major flavonoid aglycones, hydroxycinnamic acids, carotenoids and the total antioxidant activity of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum cv Perfectpeel); in addition, we have investigated the bioactivity of polyphenol extracts from tomato. The main polyphenols in extracts were quercetin (33.90 ± 6.31 mg kg )1 and 17.92 ± 1.09 mg kg )1 in conventional and organic extracts), chlorogenic acid (3.52 ± 0.74 mg kg )1 and 2.82 ± 0.92 mg kg )1 in conventional and organic extracts) and caffeic acid (3.61 ± 0.71 mg kg )1 and 3.29 ± 0.33 mg kg )1 in conventional and organic extracts). Although statistical differences were found between organic and conventional extracts in several target compounds, no difference in biological effect was observed using cell models. The observed Trans Epithelial Electrical Resistance values were not significantly different between organic and conventional tomato extracts, but we have observed, in both samples, a decrease in tight-junction permeability at 17 lm of polyphenol concentrations. Antioxidant compounds entering within the cell could exert an antioxidant action, nevertheless at concentrations >17 lm could have a pro-oxidant effect.

Selection of promissory crops of wild cherry-type tomatoes using physicochemical parameters and antioxidant contents

Tomato is considered a fruit with a high food demand across the world due to its high antioxidant capacity. Lycopene content in tomato has been widely studied, particularly in cherry-type tomatoes which are considered a high source of lycopene for humans. The aim of this study was to analyze the differences in terms of concentration and variation of diverse physicochemical parameters of quality (acidity, vitamin C, pH, °Brix, color coordinates L*, a* and b*) and, antioxidants like β-carotene and lycopene in 11 accessions of cherry-type tomatoes, considering the advantages of antioxidants for human health. Multicriteria analysis and other tests showed substantial differences among the accessions. IAC401 was associated with the best physicochemical characteristics of a promissory cherry-type tomato for cultivation due to its association with functional food, followed by IAC426R and IAC1624. This study allowed an innovative association of physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant contents of cherry-type tomatoes through multicriteria analyses which enable the analysis, elimination, and proposal of promising accessions for their use in future crops which will promote the best intrinsic features of tomato to be used in the studied region. In this case accessions with the highest scores offer not only optimum amounts of antioxidants and highest levels of organic acids and sugars.

This research was aimed to study the effect of feed and solvent ratio (f/s), antisolvent variety and solvent variety to the extraction of lycopene from tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum)by using single solvent and antisolvent crystalization method. The solvent that used was hexane and ethyl acetate and also methanol and ethanol as the antisolvent. Tomatoes was milled and then extracted. Antisolvent then added to the extract which was obtained. The results show that the more feed and solvent ratio (f/s) the more lycopene obtained. At the ratio of 1:4,5 with hexane as the solvent obtained the highest lycopene yield were 2,7 mg/150 ml and 2,2 mg/150 ml. Whereas at the ratio of 1:4,5 with ethyl acetate as the solvent obtained the highest lycopene yield were 3,2 mg/150 ml dan 2,8 mg/150 ml. By using methanol as an antisolvent, much lycopene would be obtained. By using ethyl acetate as a solvent, much lycopene would be obtained.
