Review of the Mediolata (Acari: Stigmaeidae) of Russia

Abstract: In this paper, the genus Mediolata Canestrini (Acari: Stigmaeidae) of Russia is revised. Mediolata neocalifornica sp.n. is described based on female and male collected from the bark of various trees in Western Siberia. Female and male of Mediolata pini Canestrini, 1889, as well as females of Mediolata conserva Kuznetsov, 1977, M. similans Gonzalez- Rodriguez, 1965, and M. granaria Gonzalez-Rodriguez, 1965 are redescribed based on materials from Russia. Mediolata granaria is recorded from Russia for the first … Show more

“…Furthermore, the trait is not a stable characteristic because it is variable in some species. While this type of categorisation and reconstruction may be useful for separating clades of closely related species, especially in morphologically and ecologically diverse monophyletic genus (Dubois 2007, 2008; Teta 2019), it is inadequate to create such sub-taxa without sufficient evidences, e.g., reliable morphological characteristics (Khaustov, 2023), phylogenetic basis, ecological or genetic evidences. As is known, the category subgenus prevents unnecessary change of genera.…”

“…The mite family Stigmaeidae (Acari: Prostigmata) is the largest in the superfamily Raphignathoidea and currently includes about 640 species in 33 valid genera (Fan et al 2016(Fan et al , 2019Beron 2020;Khaustov 2022;Mohammad-Doustaresharaf et al 2023). Most stigmaeid mites are free-living predators of various small arthropods.…”
