Review on Pharmocological Properties of Aaka (Calotropis procera)

Abstract: Calotropis procera belongs to the family Asclepiadaceae. It is commonly known as Madar and well known for its medicinal value. Its medicinal properties are explain in Unani medicinal system and regarded as a useful tribal shrub. India has a huge diversity of rural and tribal community still depends upon medicinal plants. The genus contained a large group of chemical compounds that exert many pharmacological effects. The plant parts have significant therapeutic value even in fresh or in dry form and exhibits va… Show more

“…The whole plant contains α and β amyrin, teraxasterol, gigantin, giganteol, isogiganteol, β-sitosterol, and a wax 14 . Roots of the plant contain triterpenes, a new norditerpenyl ester, named Calotropterpenyl ester, mundarol isovalerate and quercetin -3-rutinoside apentacyclic triterpinoids such as Calotropurseny acetate and calotropfriedelenyl acetate, akundarol isovalerate 15 . The roots are alterative, Anthelmintic, depurative, diaphoretic, emetic, expectorant, febrifuge, and purgative; used to treat anasarca, asthma, ascites, and bronchitis, cough, cutaneous diseases, intestinal worms, leprosy, and eczema 16 .…”

“…arbor-tristis leaves have been associated with anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and analgesic effects. Overall, the leaves of both plants offer unique compositions that align with their distinct characteristics and traditional uses. This study entails a comparison involving the utilization of dried leaf powders to assess their efficiency in methane hydrate formation and storage within the hydrate structure. The impact of these bio powders is juxtaposed against the established surfactant promoter sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), as well as the baseline experiment involving pure water.…”

“…A recent study recommends the use of C. procera leaves extract as an alternative milk coagulant because of the presence of the calotropin enzyme in it and there is no toxicity found even at higher doses (Abebe & Emire, 2020 ). This plant has also been found to be associated with neuroprotection in neurodegenerative diseases, that is, Alzheimer's disease by attenuating the accumulation of amyloid‐beta proteins in neuronal tissues (Paul et al., 2018 ). Crude leaves powder has been documented to be used relieving joint pain and reducing inflammation (Meena et al., 2011 ).…”
