Révision et phylogénie du genre<i>Nemocephalus</i>Guérin-Méneville 1827 (Coleoptera : Curculionoidea : Brentidae)

This paper presents a first critical review of the beetle species (Insecta: Coleoptera) reported from the (former) Dutch Antilles as well as a history of beetle collecting and collectors on the islands. The introductory section provides a concise overview of the location, climate, geology and vegetation of the six islands. The catalogue is concluded with miscellaneous additions, corrections and annotations to the published records of the other islands of the northern Leeward Islands, and a comprehensive bibliography. “…The genus Nemobrenthus Sharp is a small group of Neotropical brentids belonging to the tribe Acratini, including eight nominal species: six previously included by Sforzi & Bartolozzi (2004) in this genus, and two others recently added (Mantilleri 2014(Mantilleri , 2015. As the rest of the tribe, the group is in great need of systematic revision as descriptions of taxa were often based upon variable characters of the external morphology without careful study of the genitalia.…”

A systematic revision of the Neotropical genus Nemobrenthus Sharp is carried out on the basis of morphological characters. Prior to this study, the group included eight nominal taxa. Only three species are actually considered valid-Nemobrenthus sublaevis Boheman from Atlantic Brazil, Nemobrenthus helmenreichii Redtenbacher from South-Central Brazil, and Nemobrenthus aeneipennis Sharp from Central America and the northern part of South America-as several new synonymies are proposed: Nemocephalus tonsus Kleine, n. syn. for Brenthus sublaevis Boheman; Nemocephalus gounellei Kleine, n. syn. for B. sublaevis; Brenthus suratus Boheman, n. syn. for B. sublaevis; Nemobrenthus expletus Kleine, n. syn. for Trachelizus helmenreichii Redtenbacher; Nemobrenthus bechynei Soares & Scivittaro, n. syn. for T. helmenreichii; Nemobrenthus pereirai Soares & Scivittaro, n. syn. for T. helmenreichii; Nemobrenthus melzeri Kleine, n. syn. for T. helmenreichii. Lectotypes are designated for B. sublaevis and N. tonsus. A key to the three recognized species of Nemobrenthus is provided.
