Revisiting the Complications of Orthodontic Miniscrew

Abstract: Miniscrew has been used widely as an effective orthodontic anchorage with reliable stationary quality, ease of insertion and removal techniques, immediate or early loading, flexibility in site insertion, less trauma, minimal patient cooperation, and lower price. Nonetheless, it is not free of complications, and they could impact not only the miniscrew success rate but also patients’ oral health. In this article, literature was searched and reviewed electronically as well as manually to evaluate the complicatio… Show more

“…In scenarios wherein the foreign body displacement is witnessed clinically, imaging modalities play the role of the next important diagnostic tool. Plain radiographs and advanced imaging techniques such as ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and CT help localize the anatomic location of the foreign body and vital structures in its proximity [ 2 , 4 , 7 , 11 ].…”

“…These mini-screws are capable of self-drilling and self-tapping, and unlike dental implants, they do not require osseointegration prior to mechanical loading. Conventionally, these mini-screws are applied onto the bone surface through mucosal puncture and are screwed in place by the application of pressure [ 1 , 2 ]. The retromolar area in the posterior mandible is an anatomical site where TAD mini-screws are frequently placed to distalize the mandibular molars [ 1 ].…”

“…The studies that are available demonstrate that aligners have a reduced risk of root resorption when compared to fixed appliances, despite the fact that there is little research on root resorption associated with aligner applications [31,[38][39][40][69][70][71][72][73][74]. This could be as a result of the intermittent, comparatively light pressures that these appliances employ, which result in less tooth movement and apical displacement.…”

“…It is necessary for orthodontics to widely understand the potential dental risks that can occur using OMs, to avoid them, and to improve clinical practice [ 30 , 31 , 32 ]. The aim of this review was to evaluate tooth injuries after OMs insertion, in order to understand potential risks and dental complications associated with the use of OMs [ 33 ].…”
