Rheological and mechanical properties of polyphenylene sulfide reinforced with round and rectangle cross-section glass fibers

Abstract: Two kinds of glass fibers with round (RdGF) and rectangle cross-sections (RcGF) were used to reinforce polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), respectively. In this way, the effect of fiber cross-section shape on rheological and mechanical properties of the composites was studied for the first time. Results showed that the viscosity of the composites reinforced with RcGF was much lower than that of RdGF composites, owing to their higher sensitivity to flow. As a result, PPS/RcGF composites could be injection-molded at hi… Show more

“…The mechanical and physical properties of pure PPS have been widely investigated; however, pure PPS has been rarely used as a final material because of its relatively low mechanical properties [ 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ]. Therefore, researchers have developed a lot of PPS composites reinforced with fibers to improve the physical, thermal, and mechanical properties of PPS [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 ]. Among the group of reinforcing fibers, thermoplastic composites reinforced with continuous fibers are very interesting in terms of making large-size aircraft and other products.…”

“…Although the physical, thermal and mechanical properties of PPS are widely investigated, 1–27 very few of PPS can directly be used as plastic products 28–34 . In order to improve the physical, thermal, and mechanical properties, PPS composites reinforced by fiber 14,35–43 or filled by mineral filler 44–59 have been developed. Glass fiber reinforced PPS (GF/PPS) composites are the most successful commercialization type among all kind of modified PPS materials and are widely used in aerospace, automobiles, electronics, chemical machinery due to its excellent mechanical properties, heat resistance, flame retardancy, chemical resistance and attractive cost benefit.…”
